GIS Projects Summary Page
Water Well Data (Updated 08/2009)
The Division has an on-line process for obtaining water well record data. There are three different types of location-dependent searches that can be completed depending on the desired shape of your study area. The three different types of searches include radius, area, and polygon. To conduct a search of the water well record database, go to http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/water/maptechs/wellogs/appNEW/ .
The results of search list can be downloaded into a spreadsheet to create a shape file of located water well records. It should be noted that less than 50% of the water well records in the ODNR database have locational data (latitude/longitude or state plane). We are continually trying to geocode as many records as we can but a majority of the older records have an incomplete address. If you desire all the records for a county or township, a Custom Data Search can be conducted that will return all the records that meet your search criteria.

Ground Water Resource Coverages
The Division has completed the mapping of the ground water resources for every county in Ohio. Although all of the ground water resource maps have been created, only a portion of them have been converted to a digital Arc/Info format. These coverages were created on a county basis and are in various stages of completion. PDF versions of all 88 countes can be viewed/downloaded from the Ground Water Mapping and technical Services web page.
NOTE: Coverages available for download may be found by searching the ODNR GIS central archives. Links to download coverages are provided within the metadata reports that are returned as the result of archive queries.

Ground Water Pollution Potential Maps (Updated 08/2009)
The Division of Water has created pollution potential maps for 73 of the 88 Ohio counties. The shape files were created on a county basis.
NOTE: Shape files available for download may be found by searching the ODNR GIS central archives. Links to download the shape files are provided within the metadata reports that are returned as the result of archive queries.

Ground Water Potentiometric Surface Maps (Updated 08/2009)
Ohio's potentiometric surface mapping program began in the late 1990's under the direction of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water. This program was initiated by the Ohio EPA for use in their Source Water Assessment Program. The Division has created potentiometric surface maps for 37 counties in Ohio, most located in the Lake Erie basin. To view a map showing the availability go to www.dnr.state.oh.us/water/gwpsurface/Psurface_Status/tabid/3626/Default.aspx
Potentiometric surface (or water table) maps indicate the elevation and horizontal direction of ground water flow. Potentiometric surface maps are being created for bedrock (consolidated formations) and sand & gravel (unconsolidated formations) aquifers.
NOTE: Shape files available for download may be found by searching the ODNR GIS central archives. Links to download shape files are provided within the metadata reports that are returned as the result of archive queries.

State Wide Aquifer Map (Updated 12/2000)
( Go to main page of this item now)
In March 2000 the Division of Water completed a series of aquifer maps that cover the entire state of Ohio. Separate maps were constructed for the bedrock and unconsolidated aquifers. All maps were prepared at a scale of 1:24,000 (1 inch equals 2000 feet), digitized into the GIS program ArcInfo, and then joined into statewide aquifer coverages. These coverages contain information on aquifer yield, thickness, boundaries and names. Coverages are available in ArcInfo (.e00) export format or ArcView shapefile (.shp) format.
Floodplain Management GIS (Updated 01/2006)
The Division of Water is currently using a GIS interface to incorporate the various data sources associated with floodplain management. This GIS application provides an organized, comprehensive method of obtaining floodplain information in an Arcview environment. Future goals associated with this project focus on using the available information to enhance the level of floodplain management provided by the Division of Water.

Dam Inventory Coverages
The Division of Water has created an Arc/Info coverage of the inventory of regulated dams in Ohio. This coverage contains an enormous amount of data and is currently being manipulated to provide an organized presentation of the information.
