Boater Code of Conduct

The Division of Watercraft introduced a list of 12 best boating practices known as the “Boater Code of Conduct” to promote boating safety awareness in the Division’s 2011 Calendar/2010 Annual Report. Three items are featured in each issue of the Buckeye Boater this year; here are three more.

JULY
A hot summer day beckons boaters and anglers to enjoy a cold beer or other alcoholic refreshment. Often, this leads to consumption of alcoholic beverages which make operating a boat or motor vehicle unsafe and illegal. The simple act of riding in a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs creates a safety risk that can result in loss of life. Nearly 1 of every 3 boating fatalities is alcohol related. Boat sober and get on board with a sober boater serves as a reminder that boating and alcohol don’t mix.

AUGUST
Boating on Ohio waterways remains very popular. Ohio had a record 424,700 watercraft registered in 2010, ranking it among the top 10 states nationally. In addition to many boaters, our waterways are also enjoyed by swimmers, anglers, and other recreational users. Share the waterway. Give ample room to others who are in and on the water, be mindful of your wake, and observe all navigational buoys and boating rules.

SEPTEMBER
Any accident on the water can ruin a day of boating and result in severe injury or loss of life. Maintain a proper lookout and be aware of your surroundings at all times while boating. Avoiding potential navigation hazards such as people, animals, and objects in or near the water reduces the likelihood of being involved in a boating-related accident.
