Options for Learning... Fulfilling Ohio's Boater Education Law

You can successfully complete either a NASBLA-approved boating course or a proficiency exam in order to fulfill Ohio's Boater Education Requirement.

Description Minimum 8 hours of instruction in a certified class. May be in one day or across several weeks. For the knowledgeable boater. Exam takes about an hour and is similar to the test taken at the end of a classroom boating course. Home-study coursebook is recommended for brushing up on boating laws. Coursebook and reference materials are mailed to you. Work at your own pace through the coursebook, fill out a workbook, and take the test. You send us the completed workbook and test for grading. Great companion text to OBEC Online. Offers you the same content as the classroom and home-study options and is specific to Ohio boating. Study at your own pace; test must be completed in one session.
Passing Grade Typically 70%. May vary with course. 70% or better grade The online exam requires an 80% or better grade to pass.
Certificates Issued for passing a course. The type of certificate (paper or plastic card) depends on your instructor submitting information to ODNR Watercraft. If you pass the exam, you are entered into the Ohio Boater Education database. ODNR Division of Watercraft issues you a certificate of proof in the form of a plastic wallet-size card. If you lose your card, we can get you a replacement at no charge.

Cost No cost from ODNR Division of Watercraft. No cost. You are responsible for postage costs of mailing the completed test and workbook back to us. Study at no cost. You pay $24.50 only if you pass (credit card required).
