Common Questions (Frequently Asked Questions - F.A.Q.)

Where do I find the Hull Identification Number on my boat?

The Hull Identification Number (HIN) for your boat is a unique number associated with a boat that helps to accurately identify a specific boat and its legal owner for manufacturer recall and proof of ownership reasons.

State and federal laws require all watercraft manufactured after November 1, 1972, to have a 12-digit HIN. The number is generally located on the right side of the transom (back end) of your boat and comprises 12 letters and numbers etched or stamped into the boat. It may also be stamped into a metal tag that is attached to the transom.

HIN location: Upper right corner of transom

If you have been asked to make a pencil tracing of the HIN for registration purposes, please make sure all letters and numbers are readable on your pencil tracing.

If you cannot locate the HIN, contact any Division of Watercraft field office to schedule an appointment for a HIN inspection of your boat. Your appointment may be scheduled several weeks from the date of your call, so please plan accordingly.

If your HIN is recorded incorrectly in our registration records, you may not receive a mail renewal form when your boat registration comes up for renewal.

If it is determined your boat does not have the required HIN, one will be issued if your boat meets certain requirements. After completion of this process, your registration will be corrected.

If you have any other questions concerning your boat's Hull Identification Number, contact the Division of Watercraft Central Office Registration and Titling Section at 1-877-4BOATER (1-877-426-2837 from within Ohio only) or 614-265-6480.
