Ohio Boat Registration & Titling Information

All Boats Need Registrations

Registrations are required for every recreational boat in Ohio, including paddlecraft and inflatables. [More on Registration Laws]

Not All Boats Need Titles

Titles show proof of ownership and are required for all boats 14 feet or greater, outboard motors 10HP or greater, and PWCs (ie. Jetski, Sea-Doo, etc.). Canoes and kayaks do not need to be titled. [More on Titles] [Find a Title Office]

No Decals?

If you submitted a payment for a boat registration but did not received your decals, please contact us. Be sure to include your name, boat registration number, date you renewed, confirmation number if you renewed online, and a phone number where we can reach you during the day. 1-877-4BOATER (toll-free, in Ohio only) or 614-265-6480 or wcrenewal@dnr.state.oh.us

Renewing Your Registration

Most boat registrations can be renewed online, through the mail, or in person at a Watercraft Registration Agent. If you are going to an Agent, call in advance for hours and acceptable method of payment. You will need to bring proof of identification (driver's license or other acceptable ID).

Renew Online

Online Watercraft Registration Renewal runs January 8 through September 30:

  • You can use our secure web site to renew your boat registrations IF your boat registration expired in 2006, 2007, or 2008 and a PIN was issued to your boat. Within the online renewal process, you can change your mailing address for the boat registration being renewed.
  • You need your "OH" boat number and PIN (both located on your renewal notice) and a valid Visa or Mastercard credit card to renew online. If you don't have a PIN, contact us to determine if a valid PIN was issued.
  • You CANNOT change boat ownership online. You CANNOT use online renewal if there are any corrections to your boat's information. Please see your local Registration Agent in these cases.

Alternative Registration for Hand-Powered Boats

Alternative Registration for Hand-powered Vessels - This registration provides a one-decal numbering option for hand-powered canoes, kayaks, rowboats, inflatables, rowing sculls, racing shells, and pedal boats that will never be propelled with a motor or sail.

Common Answers

Need replacement decals? Lost your registration? Replacement decals or a copy of your registration are available through the mail or at one of our Watercraft Offices. They cost $4 each ($4 for a new set of decals or $4 for a copy of the registration). You need to send/bring in this form [17k; PDF] with the fee.

How long does it take to get renewal decals? If you visit an agent and everything is in order, you can walk out with decals. If you renew via the Internet, please allow 10 working days to get your decals. If you renew via the mail, please allow 15 working days. Your decals must be displayed on the boat to be legal.

Visiting from out-of-state? You are welcome to use your out-of-state boat in Ohio as long as it is legally registered for your current state of residence. You need to abide by all Ohio boating laws and should have proof of residency.

Notify us if you change your address OR if you sell your boat. Send the OH number as well as the old and new information to us.

Buying a used boat? If the boat is titled, be sure to have the owner transfer the title to you BEFORE you attempt to transfer the registration to your name. You don't own it until you have a title for it in your name. If the boat doesn't require a title, then the owner can sign ownership over to you on the back of the registration.
