Ohio Water Trails

Ohio Water Trail logo

The Ohio Water Trails team includes several employees from divisions within the Ohio Department of Natural Resources along with representatives from the League of Ohio Sportsmen, National Park Service (Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program), Ohio Parks and Recreation Assocation (Ohio Greenways), and National Park Service. This team works with local partners to promote the awareness of public boating access by developing designated water trails on Ohio streams.

Find a Water Trail

Detailed maps (PDFs) on the Kokosing River Water Trail (designated June 4, 2005) and the Muskingum River Water Trail (designated July 8, 2006) are available. A number of links to other water trails, including those outside of Ohio, are also listed.

The Kokosing River Water Trail was the first designated trail in Ohio (June 4, 2005).  The Kokosing State Scenic River enjoys a diverse ecosystem with riverine plant communities and active mammal and bird populations. More than 70 species of fish have been documented in the watershed.

The Muskingum River Water Trail was designated as the second water trail in Ohio on July 8, 2006. The Muskingum River is the longest continually navigable river lying wholly within Ohio. It has historically served as a transportation corridor to and from the Ohio River, and its abundant resources have sustained communities throughout history. The hand-operated locks of the Muskingum River Parkway (managed by ODNR State Parks) have not inhibited its natural qualities; the river is home to abundant fish, birds, and wildlife. Cities along the river provide ample amenities for through-boaters and day-trippers alike. The area is rich in history and natural appeal, making it an ideal water trail destination for all types of motorized and hand-powered boats.
