* Wildlife Rehabilitation Category I & II

A Category II Rehabilitators Permit allows the individual permit holder to rehabilitate all species of wildlife for which they have the appropriate facilities except deer, coyote, bald eagles, osprey, peregrine falcons, or state/ federal endangered species unless otherwise approved by the Chief of the Division of Wildlife. Category II permit holders must have the ability to properly care for wildlife that is diseased, injured, or are otherwise in need of rehabilitative care. As a license rehabilitator you accept responsibility for all necessary care & conditioning needed to return the animal to the wild. This may involve transferring the animal to another licensed rehabilitator or euthanizing the animal if required.

Raccoons that originate or are from the following counties cannot be rehabilitated and must be euthanized: Ashtabula, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Harrison, Jefferson, Lake, Mahoning, Monroe, Portage, Summit, and Trumbull.  In the remaining 74 counties, raccoons and skunks must be euthanized or held for 65 days with no sign of disease before being released. If held for 65 days, the wildlife must be released in the same county and township in which they were originally obtained.

Persons holding a Category I Rehabilitators Permit may rehabilitate orphans for which they have the appropriate facilities, except avian species, deer, raccoons, opossums, beavers, foxes, coyotes, weasels, skunks, badgers, minks, bats, and state or federal endangered species. Furthermore, a Category I Rehabilitators Permit holder is not authorized to accept injured wildlife except for emergency care and transport within 48 hours to a Category II facility.

A licensed rehabilitator accepts responsibility for all necessary care & conditioning needed to return the animal to the wild. This may involve transferring the animal to another licensed rehabilitator or euthanizing the animal if required.

Wildlife shall not be transported into or out of Ohio without first obtaining written permission from the Chief.

Tours or educational programs should not be conducted in areas where animals are being rehabilitated.
