Summary of 2009 Ohio Peregrine Falcon Nesting Season

Division of Wildlife staff monitored 28 territorial pairs around the state. In addition, 2 sites had possible pairs and there were 6 single falcons reported over the course of the nesting season.

At least 24 nesting pairs produced eggs, and at least 19 pairs were successful in hatching eggs and fledging young. Eggs were not seen at 2 sites but their presence was confirmed by extended incubation behavior. We could not confirm if the Sciotoville pair produced eggs or fledged young.

Biologists banded 59 young peregrines at 18 accessible nest sites. We believe that a total of 63 young falcons fledged successfully from 19 nest sites around Ohio, including sites where banding was not possible because of inaccessibility.

Eight nesting attempts by 5 pairs failed; those pairs were at sites in Lakewood (3 attempts), Shaker Heights (2 attempts), Cleveland at the Bohn & Superior buildings, Cleves, and Wrightsville.

Our best estimates are that 81 eggs were produced in 2009 (excludes 2 sites where eggs couldn’t be counted), 63 eggs hatched (78%), and 63 young fledged successfully. Ohio peregrine falcons fledged 3.3 chicks per successful nest in 2009.

Other Sightings & Information:

  • Brilliant (Cardinal Power Plant on Ohio River, Jefferson County) - a smokestack nest box with unconfirmed juvenile was reported in late June; a follow-up to the site is planned.
  • Chillicothe (Downtown area) - a single bird was observed in late February.
  • Columbus (Ohio State University campus) – an unbanded adult male & banded subadult female (Clementine, 2008, *S/*X) were observed near the stadium; a 2nd banded female (P/*X) was seen in late March.
  • Findlay (Marathon building) - a single bird was seen at this site and a nest box was placed in mid-March.
  • Erie County (Sandusky Bay bridge) - a single bird was seen sporadically perched on this bridge since August 2008.
  • Springfield (Tecumseh building) - a possible pair was reported in March.
  • Cleveland (Lakeshore Power Plant) - a pair was seen defending a nest box in late May, but no eggs were produced; possible female ID may be S/75.
  • Warren (Water Department Facility water tower) - a pair was reported and follow-up revealed a sub-adult pair with no eggs or young; both were banded with b/g bands.
  • Wrightsville (Killen Power Station) - a pair was confirmed in mid-June; the female was incubating 2 eggs under a conveyor; the nest failed in early July. A box will be placed.
