Summary of 2008 – Productive year for peregrines in Ohio
Division of Wildlife staff monitored 27 territorial pairs around the state
Twenty-five nesting pairs produced eggs, and 21 pairs were successful in hatching eggs and fledging young.
Biologists banded 60 young peregrines at 18 accessible nest sites. We believe that a total of 65 young falcons fledged successfully from 21 nest sites around Ohio, including sites where banding was not possible.
Five nesting attempts by 4 pairs failed; those pairs were at sites at Aberdeen, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland-Bohn building, and Cleves (2 attempts).
92 eggs were produced in 2008;
67 eggs hatched (73%);
60 chicks lived to 3 weeks of age & were banded;
65 young fledged successfully;
Ohio peregrine falcons fledged 3.1 chicks per successful nest in 2008.
Other Sightings & Information:
- Lakeshore Power Plant, Cleveland - a single falcon was reported in mid-March 2008
- Ohio State University campus, Columbus - male falcon seen near OSU Stadium in March 2008; unconfirmed 2nd falcon & territorial interactions in the area
- Ross County Court House, Chillicothe - unconfirmed report of a single falcon in late January & mid-April 2008
- Wittenberg University, Springfield - a pair seen last fall after death of 2007 adult female; only sightings of a single falcon over winter & early spring 2008
- AK Steel, Middletown - a pair present, nest confirmed; at least 2 young present (hatch = ~5/15; fledging suspected in late June) - no access for banding. Adult female ID = "Surge" P/01 (b/g); adult male ID = "Dragon" 54/P (b/g)
- I-80 Turnpike Bridge over Cuyahoga River, northern Summit County - a new nesting pair suspected; no or eggs young seen
- Train Trestle over Ohio River, Sciotoville, Scioto County - a new pair reported using this bridge in June 2008; nesting suspected but not confirmed
